Appalachian Trail Gateway

With 829 acres of pristine North Georgia wilderness and wildlife, it’s easy to see why Amicalola Falls State Park & Lodge is one of the most popular Georgia State Parks.

Few parks provide as many diverse trail options as Amicalola Falls State Park & Lodge and none can match the highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River.

While there are 10 total trails emanating from the park, the most popular pathway for serious hikers is the 8.5-mile Approach Trail that runs from the park to Springer Mountain, the southern terminus of the famous Appalachian Trail (AT). Imagine beginning a six-months, 2,000+ mile backpacking adventure to Maine as you follow the blue blazes of the Appalachian Approach Trail alongside peaceful Little Amicalola Creek. Thru-hikers can register or check in for the AT and get advice from our expert staff before heading out.

The trailhead is marked by a stone archway that has become an iconic symbol for experienced trekkers and weekend ramblers who make the ascent toward the legendary Appalachian Trail.

Hike Inn

Five miles along the trail, find rest and welcome at the Len Foote Hike Inn. The Inn — open year round — is a sustainably designed Georgia State Park facility nestled in the Chattahoochee National Forest. Its four main buildings offer 20 private guest rooms, hot showers, fresh linens and home-cooked meals. A favorite of day hikers and AT thru-hikers alike, the Hike Inn’s mission is to make experiencing nature easy, and help protect it through education and recreation.
